Richardson’s Sun and Steel capsule pays homage to legendary Japanese writer, martial artist, bodybuilder, and gay icon Yukio Mishima. Celebrated as one of Japan’s most important literary figures, Mishima committed seppuku on November 25, 1970, after giving a speech at Camp Ichigaya military base about resisting Americanization to save the soul of Japan. The capsule takes its name from Sun and Steel, his autobiographical essay on “art, action, and ritual death.”
The capsule includes a black t-shirt screenprinted with images of Mishima and scans of his writing; a white long sleeve printed on the front with a newspaper announcing his suicide with additional printing on the back and sleeves; and a black starter jacket lined with screenprinted ivory satin, featuring embroidery of Mishima’s signature on the wearer’s left breast, the Tantenokai emblem on the wearer’s right arm, and calligraphy reading “voices of the heroic spirits.”
